Customizing Your Mentoring Toolkit Overview

Customizing Your Mentoring Toolkit

Customizing Your Mentoring Toolkit is designed to provide mentors with a range of evidence-based tools and practical skills to consider in mentoring. This concise (one-to-two hour) asynchronous Canvas course is designed to help you develop tangible documents to support your mentoring through a series of case studies, expert interviews, and activities.

The program guides you to develop a tailored, thoughtful mentoring plan for your research group to support recruiting, daily working interactions and protocols, and include where helpful in funding proposals. Working through the prompts in the program can help improve communication for your group, and create transparency around expectations for not only what you expect of your mentees, but also what your mentees can expect from you.

Promoting the professional growth of another—mentoring—is not a one size fits all endeavor. Individual mentors and mentees have distinct needs and expectations, and an effective relationship is most successful when these are clearly communicated and understood. As a mentor, it is your job to set the tone and to work to support the needs of each of your mentees, while also minding the boundaries of your role and time.

We present skills and tools to help you make the most out of your mentoring because it’s often not only what you do or convey as a mentor that matters, it’s how you do it. As you progress through the course, you will be guided through a three stage process to draft elements of your mentoring plan, resulting in a document that will benefit any group. This plan will also be responsive to the new 2024 NSF grant requirements.
